New feature in v0.80

So here is the list of changes for Version 0.80 of NextGEN Gallery :

1. Cache the SinglePic

SinglePic Cache

Everytime a post is using a singlepic tag it require CPU power to generates the image, with the new cache option, NextGEN Gallery creates for each used SinglePic a file, which don’t require any CPU calculation time.

2. Support for permalinks

It’s maybe not the best solution for the SEO fanatic guys, but NextGEN gallery support now some rewrite rules as long as you have a mod_rewrite enabled WordPress installation.

3. Support for multi file batch upload

Batch Upload

The fantastic SWFupload allows now a upload for multiple files at once by ctrl/shift-selecting in dialog and a progress bar during the upload. I integrates this at the moment only single images and not for the zip upload. You need a Adobe Flash for this option.

4. XMP, IPTC and EXIF meta data can now automatic imported

During the upload (and also later) you can populate the tags and description field with your Exif, IPTC or XMP data. NextGEN lookup first for XMP , then IPTC and at last for WinXP EXIF data. If some meta data are found then this information will be automatic used for the tags and description field.

5. Individual settings for a gallery and slideshow

Custom field

For each post/page you can enter custom fields (look at the bottom of the edit page ). There you can enter any key / value for this post. I created a couple of parameters to override the global settings of the gallery/slideshow with local values. The picture is a example for two parameters (Sound file and rotate time for the slideshow). All parameters are listed here :

6. Up to 10 Widgets for random /recent gallery

Widgets new

I rewrite the Widget function to exclude galleries from your Random/Recent Widget. It support also the Sidebar manager from the K2 Theme

Do you have a guide on how to upgrade from previous version? Do I just overwrite all the files?

And I have a question about this feature, “2. Support for permalinks”.

    How does it actually work?

Thanks, this is a great plugin! =)

  2. alex.rabe says:

    1.Deactivate plugin
    2.Delete old plugin files
    3.Upload the new files
    4.Activate plugin
5.Add widgets again (the old widget are not longer in use after a upgrade)

The new features are really interesting.
    I’ll try this beta today.

  4. nliebherr says:

I love your plugin and the new features sound great!
I’m just setting up a new page based on WordPress and your Gallery perfectly fits my requierements.

Just one thing: when clicking through the pictures in the thickbox of a multi-paged gallery (i’m using jQuery navigation) it’s only possible to click through the pictures of the actual page. Wouldn’t it be possible to click through all the pictures of the gallery and update the actual page in the background of the thickbox?
It’s a feature i’m missing in all gallerys i found until now 🙂

  5. Tim says:

Hi Guys… It is a very nice gallery. i implimented the PicLens feature in the gallery! (My Link & install PicLens)

Alex… do you want the code, please get in contact with me!

  6. Dayna says:

    Thanks for the tip Alex.

I was also wondering how the feature “2. Support for permalinks” works? Do you have an example of it?

  7. Knat says:

Will my albums and pictures still be there if i uninstall old plugin and install this one ?

  8. kabarety says:

The new features are really fantastic… 😉

    See you!

  9. derrick says:

Love nextgen. It’s certainly the cleanest most professional looking gallery out there. Maybe I’m missing this. I wondered if there was a way to display a slideshow within the content area? Adding the galleries to pages of course is simple, but I have someone who would just like to have a slideshow displaying images from their gallery in a page above their text.

  10. alex.rabe says:

@Tim Please send me the changes for PicLense

@Dayana You can see permalinks here :

    @Knat Yes they will

  11. Denise says:

    Hi Alex

Firstly, may I say how pleased I am with NextGen – I have tried every other gallery solution available and this is by far the best I have found – especially with the new feature and IPTC import. Only discovered it a couple of days ago and so I have been setting up new albums and galleries but have come across something odd – all of the meta data in the images I imported was there after import but now, there is no meta data at all, in any of them! Does adding the watermark somehow remove this?

  12. Olaf says:

    Hi Alex,
nach langer Zeit gestern mal wieder vorbeigeschaut, hat sich ja einiges getan. Habe dann gleich mal auf die neue Version aufgestockt. Funktioniert soweit alles.
    Was mir auffiel,
    1. in WPMU gehen die Permalinks bei mir nicht 404, da kann man auch nicht die Permalinks aktualisieren. Was kann ich da tuen?
    2. Es speichert die Rechte nicht, weder im Plugin selbst, noch im Rolemanager. Im Rolemanager ist es der erwähnte JS-Fehler mit den IDs:

    missing ; before statement
    Line 119
    createAJAX()tw-sack.js (line 43)
    sack(undefined)tw-sack.js (line 192)
    submitme(form#author__NextGEN Edit album.cap_form users.php)users.php (line 179)
    onsubmit(submit )users.php (line 1)
[Break on this error] A valid capability name can only have letters, digits and spaces

  13. alex.rabe says:

@Denise Yes, Meta data are lost after resize or watermarking

@Olaf : Kann sein, habe keine Prüfung unter WPMU durchgeführt, kann etwas dauern bis WPMU mal wieder auf dem Plan steht…

  14. jade says:

Thanks for the v0.80 New Gallery plugin for WordPress. For me, the widget slideshow works great. However, when I create a post or page with the slideshow, I get error “The Flash Player and a browser with Javascript support are needed”.

    WP version: WordPress 2.3.2

    Example post:

    Example page:

Is there a setting I’m missing?

  15. Olaf says:

Wobei ich mir nicht vorstellen kann, dass es an MU liegt, der Code:
    <input type=”image” id=”btn_administrator__NextGEN Change style”

  16. Denise says:

re: @Denise Yes, Meta data are lost after resize or watermarking

Alex – I believe this to be quite a serious issue yet cannot find a bug report on your Google list, is it a design feature or just not spotted before? I tried re-uploading some images and whilst it shows the meta when clicking ‘meta’ (in Manage Gallery), it has not populated the tags with any of the keywords embedded in the images. What I liked about NextGen’s ability to add a watermark was that the thumbnails would not show one whilst the large images would yet it is essential to retain the all the embedded meta. Do you have any workarounds please?

  17. Josh B says:

Well, first of all. Nice job on the best gallery plugin. You certainly have put a lot of time into it.

That said, I’ve got to say the interface could really use some work. Specifically for adding images.

Here’s path I have to take
Gallery -> Add Gallery -> create gallery if not exist
Gallery -> Add Gallery -> Upload Images

Then, once thats done, I need to add alt tags and descriptions
Gallery -> Manage Gallery -> Edit -> add alt tags

Why can I not upload images to a gallery via manage gallery screen? This makes absolutely no sense.

I don’t care about php options on the dashboard. Totally unnecessary for this screen. You could use this screen much more wisely to improve the easiness to upload images quickly to a gallery. Perhaps move php options to a setup page.

On upload image, allow alt tag and description to be inserted then.

  18. Marko says:

First of all, thanks for making my life easier.

I’m using your plugin together with ‘lightwindow’ plugin cause I like its features. Everything works fine except ‘prev’ and ‘next’ buttons. They won’t show up. I don’t have this problem when using lightbox 2.0. Can someone help me with this? This is the link code line I use to call ‘lightwindow’:
    class=”lightwindow” rel=”%GALLERY_NAME%”

    Thanks in advance,

  19. Marko says:

One more thing. How to set ‘Random images’ widget to point directly to gallery. For example, click on a ‘flower’ thumbnail opens the ‘flowers’ gallery.

  20. Knat says:

thanks.. new version installed and works perfectly !

    Great job 😉

  21. zach says:

seems this is a bug. with this version of nextgen gallery enabled, in write/modify post section on menu bar when I click on icon to insert a flash video, it shows “You are not allowed to call this page directly.” in pop up box.

how can i fix it? thanks

  22. alex.rabe says:

  23. gtpsrock says:

    Great stuff!

    One question:

EXIF data. Great to see that it imports it.

Just curious what good it really does. I was hoping that I could have it show some of the EXIF data say at the bottom of the image between the next/previous buttons and the “close” link.

It is just nice to be able to show the shutter speed (in fractions of seconds would be nicer), aperture, focal length, ect…

If it could, I’d probably jump up and down… Keep up the fantastic work!

  24. The new feature for adding meta ‘switches’ looks very useful, nice one.
Previous I had to edit the plugin so there were switches when calling the gallery or slideshow to not show titles or navigation.
How easy would it be for you to add the option change display method (eg lightbox as default, and highslide for one page) using the meta options?
I had been planning to try do that as a gallery call switch too, but think it might be a lot more complex than my previous successes.

  25. saymon says:

    Hey Alex,

ich hab ein Problem mit deiner neuen version von NextGEN Gallery.

Also zu erst wenn ich auf “bilder/gallerie hinzufügen” oder “gallerie verwalten” bekomme ich folgende fehlermeldung:

Warning: Call-time pass-by-reference has been deprecated; If you would like to pass it by reference, modify the declaration of [runtime function name](). If you would like to enable call-time pass-by-reference, you can set allow_call_time_pass_reference to true in your INI file in C:wampwwwPortfoliowp-contentpluginsnextgen-galleryadminfunctions.php on line 914

I have problems after upgrading to 0.8. The images were right aligned earlier but are now left aligned and it is impossible to rught align new images using the float function.
I have also problem with both version when I want to insert a galley on a page. I get it “bottom aligned” and have to scroll down to se it.

Great plug. Think I’ve probably checked virtually all of the gal plugs and yours comes out tops on overall functionality and ease of use. There’s always tech problems with IT, PC’s and software and NGG related ones don’t seem to be any major downfalls or bad reflection on the package. For what it’s worth “Well done!” I think you’re doing an awesome job. Will try the new pack straight away. You are welcome to check out my NGG gallery blog pixels. Small now, but will be adding plenty more, soon. Come and check it out if you get time 🙂
    Again Thank you.

    I have updated to v0.8.

But after i activated the plug-in again, the NextGen Gallery admin does not again come up again in the control panel.

Have i done something wrong to screw up something?

    Could anyone help?

  33. T.S. says:

    Hi Alex,

First of all, thank you for all these plugin work. NGG is the best image plugin for WP i’ve ever used. In the “about” page I found that there are names for Chinese translation, but they come with no links. And as far as I know, the Chinese translation is still at maybe 0.70 or 0.72 era… After googled them, I found those translators are in Taiwan, and therefore I in Mainland China cannot visit their blogs and get translation files. Plus, what they made might be in Traditional Chinese, not Simplified Chinese. I made a Simplified Translation .mo file myself based on Ver 0.82(should be the latest). If you like to add it to your distribution please write me an email and I’ll send it to you.

  34. Ryan says:

It would be very cool to have a feature where you could attach pictures to an email, have the gallery or album name in the subject line (or custom gallery / album email address e.g., send to a custom email address (e.a. and it will add the pics. Just an idea.

  35. james says:

I have been using the nextgen gallery for 6 months now and really like it. I would like to find out of to change the Album thumbnails? I don’t like the stacked photo look. Also when i add a bunch of Album thumbnails in my wordpress blog to make a gallery they seem to stack up rather then go across… example 5 album thumbnails across then start a new line… is there a way to fix that?

I’m translate new version of NextGEN v0.80 for portuguese (brazilian) today. I put a link to download the translate package (zip), in my blog. I really loved this plugin, tested it yesterday and translate it today. Soon, I will put a tutorial to help the Brazilians, how to use this great plugin.

  40. James says:

Hello, we’re using your plugin on our website (linked in my name) and I’ve noticed an odd thing happening.

I currently have 3 galleries in one album (I have mine set up to do one album each year with all galleries for that year in that album).

I just noticed that it’s showing the three galleries in line like normal posts should, but when I look at a photo in gallery 1 it shows the first photo in gallery 2 and 3 under it. Same when looking at a slideshow, it shows all of them at once.

Is there any way to set this up so that if you click on image 1 in gallery 1 you ONLY go to see that one image?

  41. Hi,
